For over 35 years, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) has created
unforgettable string quartet performances for national and international
audiences. Dedicated to musical excellence with a distinctly Australian
flavour, the ASQ’s purpose is to create chemistry and amplify intimacy through
experiences that connect people with string quartet music.
From its home base at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, the ASQ reaches out across Australia and the world to engage people with an outstanding programme of performances, workshops, commissions, recordings, digital and education programs.

The ASQ’s distinct sound is enhanced by a matched set of 18th century Guadagnini instruments, handcrafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743 and 1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy.
These precious instruments are on loan for the quartet’s exclusive use through the generosity of UKARIA.

Each season, the ASQ commissions several works by leading Australian composers, several of which are now available as digital recordings, released under their new series, AUSTRALIAN ANTHOLOGY.
These include works by Kate Moore, Iain Grandage, Nigel Westlake, Paul Stanhope, and First Nations artists Dr. Lou Bennett and William Barton.

Beyond its extensive regular touring
series in which the Quartet brings chamber music programmes to regional areas
as well as major cities, the ASQ has in recent years initiated several
innovative and collaborative projects.
Ranging from participative hybrid formats developed with the likes of UX design companies and food experience producers, to works with contemporary dance and virtual reality, the ASQ remains committed to inspiring and reaching audiences in new ways while continuing to develop their own artistry and curiosity.
