Neue Vocalsolisten

The seven singers of the Neue Vocalsolisten see themselves as explorers and discoverers: in exchange with composers, they are continuously searching for new forms of vocal expression.

With more than 30 premieres annually, the ensemble’s work is  considered to be both leading and unique in the field of contemporary vocal music worldwide.

With their distinctive brand of virtuosic  exploration, the Neue Vocalsolisten have shaped the genre of vocal chamber music-theatre, including works by Georges Aperghis, Carola Bauckholt, Luciano Berio, Chaya Czernowin, Ricardo Eizirik, Luca Francesconi, Andreas Eduardo Frank, Malte Giesen, Sara Glojnarić, Gordon Kampe, Mischa Käser, Georgia Koumará, Aya Metwalli, Sarah Nemtsov, Sergej Newski, Lucia Ronchetti, Katharina Rosenberger, Elena Rykova, François Sarhan, Salvatore Sciarrino, Simon Steen-Andersen, Oscar Strasnoy, Ming Tsao, Claude Vivier, Jennifer Walshe, Raed Yassin and Yiran Zhao and many more. The ensemble’s partners are the most prestigious specialist ensembles and orchestras, international opera houses, as well as the independent theatre scene, labels, electronic studios, and new music festivals and concert series presenters around the world.
Idiosyncratic interdisciplinary formats connecting music-theatre, performance, installation and concert staging form a key part of their activities. Recent collaborations included artists who explore uses of digital media, with an interest in networks, experimenting with genres, dissolving space, perspectives and functions.

The Neue Vocalsolisten regularly move between the borders of different musical cultures and genres. Recent projects included »Mediterranean Voices« in which they created a concert installation together with composers from twelve different countries in the Mediterranean region and the video artist Daniel Kötter. In the follow-up project »VOICE AFFAIRS«, the singers worked with musicians from Beirut’s experimental music scenes.

Since 2020, the Neue Vocalsolisten have been conceiving »Magical Spaces« in their Stuttgart base, working with programmers and web designers to explore performance formats between analogue and digital perception, opening up the digital space as an artistically separate stage in itself.
In March 2025, Neue Vocalsolisten returns to the Staatsoper Stuttgart stage in its central role as the “village community” representing society and reflection in the manner of a Greek Chorus, in DORA, by Bernhard Lang and Frank Witzel, the opera crowned “World Premiere of the Year” by the critics of Opernwelt Magazine in 2024.

In addition to the interpretation and further development of their genre, the Neue Vocalsolisten are dedicated to training next generation artists in the challenges of experimental vocal music in master classes and the digital »NVS Academy«.

The Neue Vocalsolisten have been honoured with numerous awards for their contributions to contemporary vocal music, including the Silver Lion of the Venice Biennale 2021 and the Italian critics’ prize Premio Abbiati 2022.

In the words of the Venice Biennale jury, the Neue Vocalsolisten is an ensemble whose »creative collaboration with some of the greatest living composers has decisively advanced the development of the contemporary a cappella repertoire«.
